The heirs by Bernard Boel, founders of the Temse shipyard, Marc, Nicolas and Virginie Saverys, have made a name for themselves in the Belgian marine sector. Initially associated with the Cigrang familyThey have created entities such as Bocimar, dedicated to the transport of dry bulk, and Exmar, specialized in the maritime transport of liquefied gas. He has an estimated fortune of over 1 billion euros.
At the head of the Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB), Marc Saverys manages Bocimar's operations, while Nicolas Saverys looks after Exmar, which became an independent company in 2003. With in-depth expertise in hydrocarbon transport, Exmar also provides ancillary services to the oil and gas industry. Despite ambitious targets that have been tempered by the volatility of the energy market, the company is still aiming for consistent development in terms of profitability.
Nicolas Saverys, who is financially involved in the Itinera think tank, also has a political background with Guy Verhofstadt at Exmar. He has expressed his visions on the state model, advocating a more efficient federal structure, without however endorsing the mixing of roles between business leader and politician.
In 2014, Nicolas Saverys took over the presidency of Voka-Havenvereniging vzw in Brussels, affirming its commitment to structuring a favorable environment for port companies.
The European gas crisis triggered by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in 2022 has transformed the gas market, sharply increasing European demand. Exmar, previously affected by challenges with the Tango FLNG platform - designed to liquefy natural gas at sea - took advantage of the situation by selling this infrastructure to ENI for a sum that exceeded expectations. Subsequently, Nicolas Saverys initiated an operation to delist Exmar from the stock exchange, valuing the company at 732 million euros.
